Understanding the Left

First, let me say that I believe in American exceptionalism. I believe that this nation was ordained by God to be an example to other nations and a light to the world. America was built on the lofty principle that “all men are created equal,” and their rights come from God not from man. This was an entirely new concept in 1776.

I believe the Pledge of Allegiance is an outward expression of our love of country. If you believe that America is an exceptional country and was ordained by God, then why would you not pledge your allegiance to it? The pledge states: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” By reciting the Pledge, we are acknowledging that America is a country founded on principles given to us by God and that all men, women, and children are equal in the eyes of the law.

I do not believe those on the Left (not the liberals, but the extreme Left) love America. Many Americans believe the Biden administration is working to fundamentally change America thus destroying America as we know it. We wonder why this is happening without understanding how it is being done. The evidence is clear to me, the Left is following Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals.” Below are a few of those rules.

Rule #1, “Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have.” Power is derived from two main sources – money and people. “Have-Nots” must build power from flesh and blood.

It’s time to choose the right and let the consequences follow. Sometimes we are afraid to speak up when we see something we disapprove of because we do not want to be ridiculed, or we feel it will do no good in our lopsided world. It’s time to be bold, be unafraid and proud of what we believe. Make no excuses. The opposition is never afraid to voice their thoughts or opinions. They believe they are in control, well, they are not. Remember, they are not the boss of you.

Rule #5. “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions.

We are not enemies just because we disagree on something. There are many things I hear from the Left that I do not understand. I’m sure they feel the same way about those of us on the Right. I’d love to be able to talk to someone on the Left without being belittled or accused of being a homophobe, a sexist, a nationalist, or a Nazi. I have even been called unpatriotic because I refused to get a Covid shot. How do we build a bridge to span both sides if we can’t or are afraid to talk to each another?

Rule #9 “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.” Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist.

We must word harder to bring people to our side and unite the nation. We must not let them use their scare tactics against us. We must use every weapon in our arsenal to combat the perceived threats of the Left. People must be educated so that their imagination cannot be used against them.

Rule #10. “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.” And

Rule #12. “The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.” Never let the enemy score points because you’re caught without a solution to the problem.

We must resist the Left’s attempt to silence us. We must not be afraid to voice our opinions. If we believe America is an exceptional nation, then we must insist that our view be heard. We must also be prepared to explain why we believe what we do. Refuse to let others define what you believe, what you like or dislike. John Wayne said something that I have tried my best to live by. He said, “Be courteous even when provoked and don’t ever start a fight, but if one starts, finish it.” I am not advising people to physically fight with anyone, I am saying we must fight with our words and ideas the best we know how.

Rule #13. “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.

The Left has succeeded in doing this with their attack on Donald Trump. We as believers in America and “the republic for which it stands” must do our best to prevent the Left from succeeding in this effort. American democracy depends on it.

America is at a tipping point. The Left wants to fundamentally change America. The Right wants its citizens to be governed by our Constitution. Thomas Paine has given us words that apply even today. “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered.” “These are the times that try men’s souls.” “The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”

Every American needs to pay attention and decide for themselves who they will support in the November elections. Will you choose freedom or tyranny? That may be one of the most important decisions of your life.

Idaho Joins Multistate Suit Asking Court to Declare EPA’s New Rule on Power Plants Unlawful

Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador joined a coalition of 25 states in a lawsuit asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to review and declare unlawful the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recently-released rule on existing coal, natural gas, and oil-fired power plants.

The rule would force power plants fueled by coal, oil, or natural gas to capture smokestack emissions – or shut down. It would regulate those plants under the Clean Air Act by imposing more stringent emissions standards. The rule ignored 2022’s rebuke from the U.S. Supreme Court in West Virginia v. EPA, which warned that EPA should not use a narrow regulatory provision to force coal-fired power plants into retirement en masse.

“In an endless pattern, the Biden Administration has ignored its statutory limitations and forced the entire country into an activist agenda,” said Attorney General Labrador. “This rule intentionally sets impossible standards to destroy the coal industry.  Federal agencies cannot decide on a whim to cripple entire industries, and they are only permitted to work within the bounds that Congress sets for them.  I won’t stand by while the Administration picks winners and losers in this battle for America’s energy independence.”

Congress has not given the EPA statutory authorization to remake the electricity grids. That means the agency cannot sidestep Congress to exercise broad regulatory power that would radically transform the nation’s energy grids—and force states to fundamentally shift their energy portfolios away from reliable fossil fuel-fired generation.

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming also joined the West Virginia and Indiana-led lawsuit.

Pocatello: Road Closure and Traffic Report for Week of May 13

The Road Closure and Traffic Report for the City of Pocatello for the week of May 13 has been posted on the City’s website.

Some of the highlights include:

  • The 100 block of S Garfield Ave. will be closed Monday from 2-9 p.m. for the Food Truck Round-Up
  • The 100 block of S Garfield Ave. will be closed Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Portneuf Valley Farmers Market
  • Street sweepers are currently performing their annual spring clean-up
  • Street Operations is patching potholes and curblines throughout the city
  • Work continues on replacing the water main line on Garrett Way, Madison Ave., Colorado Ave., and Maple St.
  • Crews will be jetting sewer lines throughout the city
  • Chubbuck Road will be closed between Pleasant View Dr. and Fairgrounds Rd. as part of the I-86/I-15 System Interchange project, and will remain closed until Fall 2024

Pocatello/Chubbuck School District Announces Selection of Ellis Elementary School Principal

Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 (PCSD 25) is pleased to announce the selection of Scott Eldredge as the Principal of Ellis Elementary School. Eldredge is replacing current Principal, Denise Lane.

Scott Eldredge, born in Pocatello, graduated from Century High School in 2005. He pursued higher education at Idaho State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in 2011, followed by a Master’s in Athletic Administration in 2014 and principal’s endorsement in 2023.

Scott started teaching science at Century High School in 2011. Apart from teaching, he is also a football coach, a member of the Building Leadership Team (BLT), chairs the Response to Intervention committee, and contributes to the biology unit development team.

Beyond his professional commitments, Eldredge coaches youth basketball, football, and soccer teams, instilling valuable life lessons of teamwork and discipline in young athletes.

Family time is a top priority for Scott. He spends much of his time skiing, camping, and playing basketball in the driveway with his wife and two young boys.

“With deep roots in our community and school district, we welcome Scott’s dedication to educational excellence and look forward to a future of growth and innovation under his guidance to Think More, Learn More, and Be MORE Together,” said PCSD 25 Superintendent, Dr. Douglas Howell. “We express our heartfelt gratitude to Denise Lane for her outstanding service.”

The administrative change will go into effect on July 1, 2024.

Melaleuca Executive Chair Responds to Concerns about PCO Candidate Support

Pocatello–Earlier this week, Melaleuca paid for a mass text message stressing the importance of the Precinct Committee Officer position.  The text included a video link, which took recipients to a third-party website featuring a list of “Candidates We Support,” giving the appearance that Melaleuca supported those candidates.  (Read the full story here.)

Melaleuca’s Executive Chairman, Frank VanderSloot, responded to public concerns regarding candidate endorsement in a second mass text, sent Friday evening.  The text reads:

Earlier this week, Melaleuca sent a video message that came to you via text, explaining the importance of precinct committeemen. That text is what we paid for.

Unfortunately, the video was then linked to another site that made it appear that Melaleuca was endorsing certain candidates as precinct committeemen. It was never our intent that our message be used to endorse anyone. We have not vetted any of the candidates that were listed on that linked site and therefore we do not take any position on any of them.

From now on, to avoid confusion, Melaleuca will send out our own communication, rather than allow our message to be linked to other groups.

This is a very important election – especially the precinct committee positions. Let’s bring unity and civility back to our party. We need leaders who will unite the party. We need honest, noble leaders, – not bomb throwers.

Ronald Reagan said that anyone who agreed with him 80% of the time, was his friend. Solving problems and building a strong nation deserves robust debate and principled argument. It’s appropriate and fair to hold people responsible for their actions and voting record, but personal attacks diminish our position and weaken our party. We hope you will choose conservative, principled leaders that will listen and lead, rather than attack each other with name-calling and innuendo.

Above all, please become informed, and exercise your right to vote.

SD25 Announces Selection of Pocatello High School Boys Basketball Coach

Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 (PCSD 25) is pleased to announce the selection of Kobi Gardea as the head coach of the boys basketball team at Pocatello High School. Gardea is replacing Joe Green, who resigned in April. In February, Green and his coaching staff, which included Gardea, led the Thunder to its first 4A State Championship in twenty years.

Gardea played four years on varsity at Pocatello High School under Coach Joe Green, where he was named All State his junior and senior seasons. After high school, Gardea joined the Idaho State University Bengals, where he played one season under Bill Evans. As a Bengal, Gardea participated every day in practice and experienced what it takes to compete at the highest level of college basketball. He then earned a full ride scholarship to play basketball at Eastern Oregon University (NAIA). Gardea earned a starting spot and led the conference in assist to turnover category. He served as a captain in both his second and third seasons, averaging ten points and six assists a game.

After his time on the court, Gardea became an assistant coach for Eastern Oregon University (2020-2023), where he was responsible for all aspects of running a basketball program, including recruiting, scheduling, fundraising, scouting reports, film breakdown, and developing players. In his first year, the team went 18-13 and lost in the quarterfinals. The second year, Gardea helped lead the team to 21-11, earning a spot at the NAIA national tournament for the first time in nine years.

Gardea moved back to Pocatello in 2023 and has been helping as an assistant coach for both the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball teams at Pocatello High School. The JV team went 16-5 with a young team comprised of sophomores and a single junior. The state championship-winning varsity team enjoyed a 22-5 season.

“Coach Gardea embodies the perfect balance of passion and discipline. Pocatello High School is confident Coach Gardea will guide our student athletes not only to victory on the court but also towards character, resilience, and teamwork. His commitment to excellence both on and off the court makes him a coach worth investing in,” said Principal Lisa Delonas.

The coaching change goes into effect immediately.

Things to watch out for:

The misnamed Idaho Liberty PAC has brought door-knockers in from out of state to attack conservative lawmakers in Canyon County. This article from the Gem State Chronicle explains how Gov. Little is indirectly funding these attacks.

Another article looks at who is behind the Gem State Conservatives, an astroturfed group led by former Idaho GOP chairmen Tom Luna and Trent Clark. They are spending literally millions of dollars to win PC races in hopes of taking control of the party this month.

Look carefully at any candidate who is endorsed by IACI or their Idaho Prosperity Fund. Will those people represent you or big business?

Half-Priced Dog and Cat Licenses from Pocatello Animal Services for the Month of May

Pocatello–All dogs and cats over the age of three (3) months that reside within the Pocatello city limits must be licensed and have the license tag affixed to their collar at all times.

License fees are half-price during May. Prices are as follows for May:

  • Non-spayed/non-neutered – $12.50
  • Spayed/neutered – $7.50
  • Senior citizen (60+) rate for non-spayed/non-neutered – $9
  • Senior citizen (60+) rate for spayed/neutered – $2.50
  • Cats $2.50 (Waived license fee for the first year with purchase of a microchip $21.23 plus tax).
  • Duplicate/replacement license – $1

*Pet licenses are effective June 1 through May 31 of the following year

*Late License Fee – $5.00 (Added to the cost of the License fees after June 1).

To be eligible for the senior citizen rate, residents must be age 60 years and older. To find a location near you where pet licenses are sold or learn more, visit pocatello.gov/151/Dog-Cat-Licenses. Simply visit a location with a valid driver’s license to get your pet a license.

Pet licenses can be purchased at Pocatello Animal Services, Pocatello City Hall (dogs only), McKee’s Feed and Garden Center (dogs only), and veterinarian clinics (check with your veterinarian to see if they sell licenses).

Cat Licenses can only be purchased at the Animal Shelter.

Multiple Animal Housing Permits must also be renewed each year starting in May. The fee is $25 for the first year and $10 each year to renew. The fee goes up to $15 to renew after May 31.

If a person inside the Pocatello city limits has three or more dogs and/or six or more cats, they are required by the City to get a Multiple Animal Housing Permit. The pet owner can pick up an application at the Animal Shelter or can print one here: pocatello.gov/DocumentCenter/View/73/Multiple-Animal-Housing-Permit-PDF?bidId=

Keep Fighting for Liberty

Idaho Republicans are still fighting for liberty.

Many of us are old enough to remember what our country was like before everything went mad. Whether you grew up in the 1950s, 70s, or 90s, you remember an America where we knew the difference between boys and girls and individual rights were sacred. Our country was a force for good in the world.

Today, we face censorship of our speech, out of control inflation and debt, and an all out attack on traditional values. Our society has gone downhill fast, hasn’t it? I would say it can’t get any worse but you and I both know it can. To be a conservative means holding on to the values that made our country great in the first place, values that are increasingly under attack in our modern culture.

The Republican Party is the last bastion against this destruction of our country. Here in Idaho, we have been fighting this battle for years. I recently read through a list of resolutions from the 2014 State Convention and was surprised to see many of the same ideas we are still debating today.

Ten years ago, the Idaho GOP resolved that:

  • Congress should enforce immigration law
  • Higher education must be fiscally accountable and transparent
  • The 2nd amendment should be defended
  • Higher education must allow for free speech and due process
  • The Legislature should create a school choice tax credit
  • Idaho should withdraw from the Obamacare exchange

Today, we face invasion on our southern border, but some Idaho lawmakers still want to give driver’s licenses to illegals!

Higher ed is less accountable and transparent than ever — when the Legislature put a stop to the University of Phoenix boondoggle, a university administrator personally dumped thousands of dollars to elect candidates who would support gambling with your tax dollars.

Ten years later and we’re still defending the 2nd amendment against those who would see you disarmed before criminals and tyrants alike. We’re still dealing with the high costs of Obamacare. We’re still trying to find a solution for families who want to escape the public school system.

This is not a hopeless fight, but it is a necessary one. Many years ago, Ronald Reagan said that freedom is never more than one generation from extinction. Every generation must fight the same battle against tyranny and totalitarianism, lest we lose the liberties our forefathers died to protect.

As you prepare to vote in the primary on May 21, as you wade through mudslinging mailers and text messages, do your research to figure out who is fighting for liberty and who is willing to let it be extinguished. The future of our state, and our nation, is in your hands.
