Alex Adams Takes Over at IDHW

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare might be the most troubled government agency in Idaho. Over the last two years, IDHW has sponsored gay pride events throughout Idaho, deliberately misappropriated federal money to support woke children’s programs, stonewalled the Office of the Attorney General when investigated, and had its needle exchange partners raided by law enforcement.

IDHW director Dave Jeppeson stepped down last fall after an audit by the Legislative Services Office found eight instances of the agency failing to follow proper procedures. Dean Cameron served as acting director through the legislative session. Today, Gov. Brad Little announced that Alex Adams would take over as permanent director next month.

Who is Alex Adams?

Adams graduated from the University of Toledo with a BA in pharmaceutical services and then achieved a master’s degree in public health at Johns Hopkins. He returned to Toledo where he was awarded a doctorate in pharmacy. He served as the director and then vice president of pharmacy programs at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, a public policy organization advocating for pharmacies throughout the country.

In 2015, Adams took over as executive director of the Idaho State Board of Pharmacy where he received accolades for his work cutting red tape and improving government services. He brought the concept of “permissionless innovation” to the BOP, slashing the rule book to focus on patient safety rather than micromanaging local pharmacies. For this he was glowingly profiled by the Idaho Freedom Foundation in its 2018 Insider Magazine.

After briefly serving interim director for the Idaho Public Charter School Commission, Adams was appointed by newly-inaugurated Gov. Brad Little to administer the Idaho Division of Financial Management. He essentially became the governor’s budget guru, working with the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee to manage the billions of dollars handled by the state each year.

In my conversations with legislative candidates this spring, one issue I keep asking about is that of the proper role of government. Many people seek a return to what the Founders envisioned —a government solely dedicated to the protecting life, liberty, and property of the citizens — but in many ways that ship sailed long ago. The New Deal turned our federal government into a charity and patronage machine, while our state constitution was written during the Progressive Era when statesmen saw the potential for what government could do rather than worrying about it going too far.

Our state constitution mandates certain programs, such as public education, but our government has still grossly expanded beyond our founders’ wildest dreams. The first step in rolling back the size and scope of government is to not only focus on core goals but to make programs as efficient, transparent, and accountable as possible. For too long, IDHW has operated outside the realm of accountability, zealously defending its right to your hard-earned cash while actively fighting oversight and audits.

Niklas Kleinworth of the Idaho Freedom Foundation shined a light on the IDHW’s myriad problems earlier this year:

I am hopeful that Alex Adams will restore accountability and transparency to Idaho’s most troubled government agency. Numerous people I trust have spoken highly of him, and his pharmaceutical background and experience with cutting government regulations make him perhaps the best person for this job. I commend Gov. Little for this choice and look forward to seeing what he can do.

Dear Friends,

Women in Idaho deserve the best possible medical care and their lives should always be protected. Full stop.

My office recently defended our Defense of Life Act before the U.S. Supreme Court against the Biden administration’s attempt to finagle federal law to override Idaho’s law that explicitly protects both the lives of women and their unborn children. Not only does our law ensure women receive life-saving care, but the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) also requires that hospitals provide life-saving care to women in emergency rooms.  As we told the Supreme Court, Idaho’s law harmonizes seamlessly with federal law in working to preserve every woman’s life.

But the Biden administration—aided by the mainstream media—continues to peddle fear, spreading blatant misinformation about the impact of Idaho’s law. The claim, originating in a friend-of-the-court brief submitted by St. Luke’s Health System in support of the Biden administration, is that Idaho’s law is forcing hospitals to transport women with “life-threatening” conditions to other states to receive abortions. But Idaho’s law requires no such thing. Under Idaho’s law, doctors are expected to use their best medical judgment to preserve every woman’s life.

Ignoring the facts, however, the media has quickly grabbed onto this narrative, causing confusion and angst for women who deserve better. I want to set the record straight because the people of Idaho—and the entire country—deserve the truth, not half-baked narratives that advance the lawless agenda of the Biden administration over the lives and well-being of women.

So let me be very clear.  Under Idaho law, women facing life-threatening conditions should be treated and provided whatever care or procedures they need to save their lives.  That’s what the law requires, and the Idaho Supreme Court has been very clear about this.  My office has been equally clear in all our filings in court: if a doctor believes in good faith that the termination of a woman’s pregnancy is necessary to save her life—regardless of how imminent that risk is—Idaho law allows it. St. Luke’s and other hospitals shouldn’t airlift a woman out of our state to perform an abortion necessary to save her life because such procedures are already permitted.

Women may need to be airlifted to larger hospitals because maternity wards in smaller, rural communities don’t have access to the fullest necessary care, and in some cases, the closest hospital that meets their needs might be out of state. Indeed, maternity wards are increasingly closing all over the country, including in states like Oregon which allows abortion up until birth. But being emergency airlifted because hospitals lack the facilities necessary to provide women facing pregnancy complications the care needed is very far from the claim that Idaho’s law is creating a need to transport them out of state.

The contention that doctors are “paralyzed by uncertainties” also concerns me. No woman facing life-threatening conditions should ever need to be airlifted to another state for an abortion. And if hospitals are doing so, they are grossly misinterpreting our law.  Idaho’s law contemplates life-threatening conditions, including sepsis, and expects doctors to do everything in their power to protect women, even if that means the tragic loss of her unborn child. Our law is about saving lives and is clear that an abortion in these situations is allowable. Nothing in Idaho law requires a hospital to delay life-saving care, and hospitals would only be harming women’s health by doing so.

As your attorney general, I will continue my outreach to doctors and hospitals across Idaho to ensure that they know what the law requires and are prepared to do all they can to save women’s lives. If you are a doctor or hospital administrator uncertain about the law’s parameters or need guidance to ensure every woman’s life is protected, please contact me. I have had very productive conversations with members of the medical community and will continue to talk to anyone who has questions.  And if you work at a hospital that believes Idaho’s law requires it to transport women facing life-threatening conditions to another state to have an abortion, let us know so we can clear up any confusion.

The Biden administration shouldn’t use women as pawns. Under the guise of caring about life, the administration is fearmongering and spreading inaccuracies about the contours of a law that seeks to protect women’s lives. That will not stand. In Idaho, we value women’s health and well-being. My promise remains: I will do everything in my power as attorney general to ensure every woman’s life is safeguarded.

Social Security’s programs are particularly important for women, who made up 55 percent of adult Social Security beneficiaries in 2023. Women typically have longer life expectancies than men and earn less income over their lifetime due to the combined impact of the gender wage gap, caregiving responsibilities, overrepresentation in low-paid jobs, and more. Social Security also provides critical benefits to 2.6 million children, including nearly one million low-income children with disabilities who receive Supplemental Security Income benefits. What’s in a Name?

Parents apply for their child’s Social Security card when they are born, making the agency America’s top source for baby names. The agency began compiling the baby names list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880. Each year, the list reveals the effect of pop culture on naming trends.

It’s clear that social media stars had a major influence on new parents in 2023. The fastest rising girl’s name, Kaeli, went viral in 2023, rising a whopping 1,692 spots. Parents must have really smashed the ‘like’ button for YouTube and TikTok star Kaeli McEwen (also known as Kaeli Mae), who routinely promotes a clean, tidy, and neutral-aesthetic lifestyle. On the boy’s side, trending in third place as the boy’s fastest riser, is Eiden – perhaps it was TikTok creator Wyatt Eiden’s 1.6 billion views and over 3 million followers that prompted this name’s meteoric rise.

Powerful names also proved very attractive to parents in 2023. Emryn made her debut in the Top 1000 baby names after moving up 1,287 spots – Ryn translates to “ruler,” so it is no shock to see Emryn becoming a leader amongst the girls. Meanwhile Chozen, the second fastest rising boy’s name, fought up to number 813 in 2023. The character Chozen becomes a hero in the latest season of the hit Netflix show, Cobra Kai – wax on, wax off!

Institute for Legislative Analysis: Leftist Voting Dominates Idaho House

WASHINGTON, DC – The Institute for Legislative Analysis has just released the vote data and analyses covering the 2024 session of the Idaho Legislature. The study, encompassing over 5,200 votes, found philosophically Democratic lawmakers have now taken control of the House of Representatives (37 Democrats to 33 Republicans) due to 5 moderate Republicans shifting their philosophies to the Democratic side. Previously, the political make-up of the House was 38 Republicans to 32 Democrats in 2023. In the Senate, Democrats flipped one moderate Republican to further solidify their control (22 Democrats to 13 Republicans) compared to 2023 (21 Democrats to 14 Republicans).

Shifts in the philosophical makeup of legislatures can sometimes be explained by actions of leadership. A review of Speaker Mike Moyle’s record shows his overall political philosophy has remained unchanged since the last analysis (64.52% in 2024 vs. 64.22% in 2023). However, an examination of the policy category data reveals Moyle has become more progressive on economic issues. Moyle’s tax and fiscal record dropped to 39.13% – representing a Democratic economic philosophy – but the drop in that category was offset by Moyle’s more conservative positions in the healthcare and local and national security categories.

A review of the data on Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Winder shows he now holds a solid Democratic philosophy due his further movement to the left (37.97% in 2024 vs. 43.75% in 2023). Additionally, he holds a very progressive tax and fiscal record of 22.74%. It is worth noting that the records of both Moyle and Winder significantly trail the conservative levels the ILA has reported for leaders of other Republican controlled states such as Florida, Tennessee and Ohio.  

 “Typically, our state legislative analyses find “Republicans” have differing views on policies – not completely different political philosophies like in Idaho” said Ryan McGowan, CEO of the Institute for Legislative Analysis. “It appears Democratic operatives have cracked the code on how to confuse voters and take control of a legislature in a predominately Republican state. It will be interesting to see if Republicans are willing to start pulling this same playbook in Democratic controlled states and run as Democrats to seize control.”

Understanding the Left

First, let me say that I believe in American exceptionalism. I believe that this nation was ordained by God to be an example to other nations and a light to the world. America was built on the lofty principle that “all men are created equal,” and their rights come from God not from man. This was an entirely new concept in 1776.

I believe the Pledge of Allegiance is an outward expression of our love of country. If you believe that America is an exceptional country and was ordained by God, then why would you not pledge your allegiance to it? The pledge states: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” By reciting the Pledge, we are acknowledging that America is a country founded on principles given to us by God and that all men, women, and children are equal in the eyes of the law.

I do not believe those on the Left (not the liberals, but the extreme Left) love America. Many Americans believe the Biden administration is working to fundamentally change America thus destroying America as we know it. We wonder why this is happening without understanding how it is being done. The evidence is clear to me, the Left is following Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals.” Below are a few of those rules.

Rule #1, “Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have.” Power is derived from two main sources – money and people. “Have-Nots” must build power from flesh and blood.

It’s time to choose the right and let the consequences follow. Sometimes we are afraid to speak up when we see something we disapprove of because we do not want to be ridiculed, or we feel it will do no good in our lopsided world. It’s time to be bold, be unafraid and proud of what we believe. Make no excuses. The opposition is never afraid to voice their thoughts or opinions. They believe they are in control, well, they are not. Remember, they are not the boss of you.

Rule #5. “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions.

We are not enemies just because we disagree on something. There are many things I hear from the Left that I do not understand. I’m sure they feel the same way about those of us on the Right. I’d love to be able to talk to someone on the Left without being belittled or accused of being a homophobe, a sexist, a nationalist, or a Nazi. I have even been called unpatriotic because I refused to get a Covid shot. How do we build a bridge to span both sides if we can’t or are afraid to talk to each another?

Rule #9 “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.” Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist.

We must word harder to bring people to our side and unite the nation. We must not let them use their scare tactics against us. We must use every weapon in our arsenal to combat the perceived threats of the Left. People must be educated so that their imagination cannot be used against them.

Rule #10. “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.” And

Rule #12. “The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.” Never let the enemy score points because you’re caught without a solution to the problem.

We must resist the Left’s attempt to silence us. We must not be afraid to voice our opinions. If we believe America is an exceptional nation, then we must insist that our view be heard. We must also be prepared to explain why we believe what we do. Refuse to let others define what you believe, what you like or dislike. John Wayne said something that I have tried my best to live by. He said, “Be courteous even when provoked and don’t ever start a fight, but if one starts, finish it.” I am not advising people to physically fight with anyone, I am saying we must fight with our words and ideas the best we know how.

Rule #13. “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.

The Left has succeeded in doing this with their attack on Donald Trump. We as believers in America and “the republic for which it stands” must do our best to prevent the Left from succeeding in this effort. American democracy depends on it.

America is at a tipping point. The Left wants to fundamentally change America. The Right wants its citizens to be governed by our Constitution. Thomas Paine has given us words that apply even today. “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered.” “These are the times that try men’s souls.” “The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”

Every American needs to pay attention and decide for themselves who they will support in the November elections. Will you choose freedom or tyranny? That may be one of the most important decisions of your life.

Idaho Joins Multistate Suit Asking Court to Declare EPA’s New Rule on Power Plants Unlawful

Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador joined a coalition of 25 states in a lawsuit asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to review and declare unlawful the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recently-released rule on existing coal, natural gas, and oil-fired power plants.

The rule would force power plants fueled by coal, oil, or natural gas to capture smokestack emissions – or shut down. It would regulate those plants under the Clean Air Act by imposing more stringent emissions standards. The rule ignored 2022’s rebuke from the U.S. Supreme Court in West Virginia v. EPA, which warned that EPA should not use a narrow regulatory provision to force coal-fired power plants into retirement en masse.

“In an endless pattern, the Biden Administration has ignored its statutory limitations and forced the entire country into an activist agenda,” said Attorney General Labrador. “This rule intentionally sets impossible standards to destroy the coal industry.  Federal agencies cannot decide on a whim to cripple entire industries, and they are only permitted to work within the bounds that Congress sets for them.  I won’t stand by while the Administration picks winners and losers in this battle for America’s energy independence.”

Congress has not given the EPA statutory authorization to remake the electricity grids. That means the agency cannot sidestep Congress to exercise broad regulatory power that would radically transform the nation’s energy grids—and force states to fundamentally shift their energy portfolios away from reliable fossil fuel-fired generation.

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming also joined the West Virginia and Indiana-led lawsuit.

The Road Closure and Traffic Report for the City of Pocatello for the week of May 13 has been posted on the City’s website.

Some of the highlights include:

  • The 100 block of S Garfield Ave. will be closed Monday from 2-9 p.m. for the Food Truck Round-Up
  • The 100 block of S Garfield Ave. will be closed Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Portneuf Valley Farmers Market
  • Street sweepers are currently performing their annual spring clean-up
  • Street Operations is patching potholes and curblines throughout the city
  • Work continues on replacing the water main line on Garrett Way, Madison Ave., Colorado Ave., and Maple St.

Pocatello/Chubbuck School District Announces Selection of Ellis Elementary School Principal

Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 (PCSD 25) is pleased to announce the selection of Scott Eldredge as the Principal of Ellis Elementary School. Eldredge is replacing current Principal, Denise Lane.

Scott Eldredge, born in Pocatello, graduated from Century High School in 2005. He pursued higher education at Idaho State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in 2011, followed by a Master’s in Athletic Administration in 2014 and principal’s endorsement in 2023.

Scott started teaching science at Century High School in 2011. Apart from teaching, he is also a football coach, a member of the Building Leadership Team (BLT), chairs the Response to Intervention committee, and contributes to the biology unit development team.

Beyond his professional commitments, Eldredge coaches youth basketball, football, and soccer teams, instilling valuable life lessons of teamwork and discipline in young athletes.

Family time is a top priority for Scott. He spends much of his time skiing, camping, and playing basketball in the driveway with his wife and two young boys.

“With deep roots in our community and school district, we welcome Scott’s dedication to educational excellence and look forward to a future of growth and innovation under his guidance to Think More, Learn More, and Be MORE Together,” said PCSD 25 Superintendent, Dr. Douglas Howell. “We express our heartfelt gratitude to Denise Lane for her outstanding service.”

The administrative change will go into effect on July 1, 2024.
